Gabber Quote of the Day

“I guess what I really wanted to say was that anybody who wants to honour the memory of my father should know that he was all about doing things for other people. And if anyone’s interested in honoring his memory, you could bring a bowl of soup to a friend or you could be philanthropic in some way, and just, you know, look out for each other.”

~Paul Newman’s daughter Melissa said the family wants people who are interested in honoring his memory to do so by helping out other people.

Looking Back at Paul Newman Through the Years

Cool Hand Luke (1967)

Harper (1966)

Sweet Bird of Youth (1962)

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof (1958) with Elizabeth Taylor

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) with Robert Redford

Hollywood’s legendary Oscar-winning actor, Paul Newman lost his battle with lung cancer on Friday, September 26, 2008. After completing chemotherapy treatment in August, he was reportedly told he only had weeks to live. After he was diagnosed with lung cancer, he reportedly withdrew as director for Mice of Men.

During his career, he was nominated for 10 Oscars and won for Best Actor for The Color of Money in 1986.

Newman announced his retirement in 2007 after claiming he was too old to continue working in Hollywood. He said:

“You start to lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention. So I think that’s pretty much a closed book for me.”

He’s survived by his wife, Joanne Woodward and their three daughters: Elinor, Melissa, and Claire. He also has two daughters from his first marriage to Jackie Witte: Susan and Stephanie.

I’m still so saddened about the loss of this amazing actor and humanitarian. When I was fundraising with friends and colleagues for the Stand For Children movement in 1996, a friend of mine wrote to him through his foundation which had their address written on the package of his famous salad dressings, Mr. Newman wrote her back with a personal check. He was true to his word about giving money to charities.

Cheers to a beloved Hollywood legend - there aren’t many stars left who can shine nearly as brightly as him.

I am truly heartbroken over the news. What a loss to the entertainment community. I knew his battle with lung cancer was a tough one, but I don’t think I could ever have been prepared for the thought of losing such a great actor and humanitarian.

Ultimate Fighting Champion Evan Tanner Found Dead

Ultimate Fighting champion Evan Tanner has reportedly been found dead in a remote desert area of California. Tanner’s body was found on Monday, September 8, 2008, about two miles from where he was camping in the Palos Verdes Mountains. Apparently, the weather had reached temperatures of up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit and early reports suggested Tanner died of heat exposure.

Imperial County Sheriff’s Lt. George Moreno doesn’t believe there was any foul play involved:

“It looks like he succumbed to the elements.”

Wow, how sad! It’s surprising a tough guy like him died that way, alone in the mountains.

Lesbian Activist Del Martin Dies at Age 87

This is such sad news! Legendary lesbian activist Del Martin reportedly died yesterday morning, August 27, 2008 at the age of 87. Phyllis Lyon, her life partner, was by her side.

After being together for over a half-century, they legally married in California in June. Kate Kendell, executive director of the National Center of Lesbian Rights released a statement:

“Martin was one of the nation’s first and most visible lesbian rights activists who dedicated her life to combating homophobia, sexism, violence, and racism. Martin’s many contributions to the LGBT movement will resonate for decades to come.

Today the LGBT movement lost a real hero. For all of Del’s life, she was an activist and organizer even before we knew what those terms meant. Her last act of public activism was her most personal—marrying the love of her life after 55 years. In the wake of losing her, we recognize with heightened clarity the most poignant and responsible way to honor her legacy is to preserve the right of marriage for same-sex couples, thereby providing the dignity and respect that Del and Phyllis’ love deserved.”

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to honor this brave woman’s life and commitment to social justice by helping to defeat the proposed California marriage ban amendment through NCLR’s No On 8 PAC found here.

Our thoughts go out to Phyllis Lyon, their family and loved ones. R.I.P. Del Martin.
