Ellen DeGeneres Replaces Paula Abdul on American Idol as Fourth Judge
Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has announced on her show’s website that she’ll the new fourth judge on American Idol. The comedian will join judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Kara DioGuardi for the ninth season in January, according to the Associated Press.
Oh, I bet Paula Abdul is so pissed at this news because she was probably hoping that American Idol would be a flop without her.
DeGeneres announced to her audience members which is scheduled to air tomorrow, Thursday, September 10, 2009, that she wouldn’t be quitting her talk show, but instead would now have “a day job and a night job.” She joked:
“The times we’re living in, we’re all doing that.”
While DeGeneres has no formal music background, she said:
“Hopefully, I’m the people’s point of view because I’m just like you. I sit at home and I watch it, and I don’t have that technical … I’m not looking at it in a critical way from the producer’s mind. I’m looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to that person.”
I think Ellen will add some good laughs to the show, but I thought it was Simon Cowell’s job to look at the contestants in the way of who is marketable, etc. I look forward to seeing what Ellen brings to the show though. Again, poor Paula - she’s probably bummed right now…

I’m so glad Ellen is going to be a judge on American Idol…I loved Paula as a judge but if she isn’t going to return I couldn’t think of a better person for the job than Ellen…I watch her show religiously and love it…always wishing I could go to one of her shows…She is so down to earth, fair, and generous…you couldn’t ask for a better pick for a judge than Ellen…she’s like us, and loves the American Idol show and has no music background and I believe that makes her a fair judge…You go Ellen…We love you down here in the south (Dothan, Alabama) Good luck and please never quit “The Ellen Show” cuz it would be horrible without you…
I am very happy that Ellen is going to be a judge on American Idol… only one problem I see… she hasn’t got a critical bone in her body and I can not see her telling anyone no!
She will definitely add the fun factor and a peoples perspective to the show so I am looking forward to that, but I gotta say… I will miss Paula’s weirdness and her spats with Simon.
What were they thinking? Ellen? As a judge?
Does she have any music or vocal background? I can’t stand to watch her talk show, and I am not sure I will watch Idol if I have to listen to her mumbling. BIG MISTAKE!
What a shame! I saw her as a judge on ‘So you think you can dance’ and she looked and acted like she was sick or on meds. I thought perhaps Cover Girl would drop her after that poor showing. Her remarks were unreal. Having her as a judge on Idol will take away from the substance of the competition.
I was shocked that Ellen was picked to replace Paula on American Idol. I was very disappointed and may not be watching American Idol come January.
I think Ellen will be a great judge. At least we can laugh with here instead of at her. It was time for Paula to go.
I am so pissed! this is a BIG mistake! Paula was suppose to return by time the show goes live! Wow, no more idol for me! Im all about Diva’s now!!
Hope that idol realizes how much of a big difference it will make and how they need paula back since she freaking has MUSIC experience! Its all FOX’s fault! Fuck it.
I’m not sure how I feel about her being on the show; she is not a ‘music’ person and this feels desperate, like a ratings pull.
