David Letterman vs Sarah Palin
David Letterman had a little fun on his show earlier this week by making jokes about Sarah Palin’s visit to NY, and she’s not happy at all. Here’s what David said during his opening monologue on Tuesday:
“The governor visited Yankee Stadium, sitting in “far, far right field” with Rudy Giuliani. “They had a wonderful time,” he continued. “The toughest part of her visit was keeping Eliot Spitzer away from her daughter.”
The Palin’s then took to their Facebooks to reply:
From Todd Palin: “Any ‘jokes’ about raping my 14-year-old are despicable. Alaskans know it and I believe the rest of the world knows it, too.”
From Governor Sarah Palin: “Concerning Letterman’s comments about my young daughter (and I doubt he’d ever dare make such comments about anyone else’s daughter): ‘Laughter incited by sexually-perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/NY entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands – that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone’s daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.’”
Oh come on, have a sense of humor! What’s even funnier about all this was Letterman’s top 10 list Monday:
“Top Ten Highlights of Sarah Palin’s Trip to New York,” included the following: “Keyed Tina Fey’s car” (No. 7), “Finally met one of those Jewish people Mel Gibson’s always talking about” (No. 3), “Bought makeup from Bloomingdale’s to update her ’slutty flight attendant’ look” (No. 2) and “Especially enjoyed not appearing on Letterman” (No. 1).

David Letterman is not funny. I have never watch show. I used to watch The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson long time ago. I don’t think there is no one can replace like the late Johnny Carson.

Are you an idiot? It was a joke about their adult daughter, the one that was “knocked up” during the failed campaign, not the underage one, jees, your bright. And he said “she got knocked up by A-Rod” (famous Yankee, look him up). Knocked up does not mean rape, again, are you an freakin idiot? There was a movie just out not too long ago, called, you guessed it(probably not) “Knocked Up”, it was a comedy, a good one, did very well. Anonymous writes like a caveman,therefore I assume Letterman exceeds his relational abilities. Sonya misses the point that it wasn’t the 14 yr. old he was joking about, it was the 18 yr. old.
Why does everyone assume he meant the 14 year-old daughter and not the 19 year-old daughter?
Oh, and I don’t believe “rape” was refered to in the joke at all- do these people watch the same show everyone else does, or are they in an alternate reality with different meanings for common English terms?
And to think, this would have been a throwaway joke had the Palin family simply kept their mouths shut. The fact that anyone thinks that this is more than Mrs Palin keeping herself in the limelight is alarming.
This isn’t a rape joke, it’s a stupid joke about Bristol. That is clearly the intent of the joke, and while in poor taste, is hardly beyond any standard of anything, and even if it were, it isn’t our business to tell Mr Letterman what he can or cannot joke about. If the Palin family dislikes being the subject of a joke, perhaps they ought to let their fifteen minutes run out. If they choose to be in the limelight, they will be the subject of jokes.
And she TOTALLY looks like a flight attendant. Or a librarian. If you dress to a fetish, expect to be mocked for it.

Would Letterman appreciate jokes about the anal rape of his son? I doubt it!
I think he’s implying that Spitzer will flirt or come on to their daughter given his choice of female company: barely legal prostitutes. Nowhere is he even hinting that Spitzer is a rapist. There would be no allusion because there is no basis in reality; Spitzer is guilty of paying for sex, not for forcing it on some young thing.
Also, he ment BRISTOL, who is 18. Otherwise the joke kind of falls apart, e.g. the young girl who’s made some poor decisions when it comes to her sex life being flirted with a pimpy bigwig player. OOooo! Scary! Besides, why would he make a joke about her little-known middle girl to an audience of middle America?

What’s strange about this video is that the obvious issue is not actually addressed. It WAS the 14 year old daughter at the game, NOT the 18 year old one.

So yeah, the Palins have a right to be pissed. The joke implied that A-Rod had sex with their daughter who was at the game - the 14 year old.
As Dave tells us above, I don’t think he had the intent of making these jokes about the 14 year old. He obviously thought he was speaking of the 18 year old. But that’s not who was in NYC.
The real issue is that someone at CBS needs their ass kicked in a big way for not fact checking and letting a joke like this air.
Palin disgusts me, but I can’t fault her for getting upset over something like this. The slutty flight attendant thing was great though.

He could have told the same joke even if none of the Palins had gone to the game. Did that just blow your mind?
You interpret jokes in their own context. In this case the lead-in was that the Palin family was there. Whether or not that was completely true is irrelevant.
So in short: demand facts and literal truths from the news channel, not from comedians.

Letterman is such a loser! Taking cheap shots at a 14 year old and then referring to Sarah Palin (you could also substitute any woman here) on TV as having a “slutty flight attendant’ look” is so demeaning. Who the hell is he, he “knocked up” his girlfriend before he got married. What a pampas asshole. Now I remember why I quit watching his stupid show. So long CBS, you’re losing more and more viewership with idiots like him.

David Letterman is just a left wing jerk. He makes fun of all women, look at how he treated the mother of his son for years before finally marrying her. Even since then, he makes fun of her and the marriage.

This is probably the best argument for NOT having Palin involved in politics. Not only did she fail to understand the McCain policies, she also seems blithely unfamiliar with the First Amendment.
It obviously wasn’t a rape joke. Good lord, people. If you don’t want comedians making jokes about you or the family you trotted out on stage for six months for the world to see, stay out of the limelight and grow a spine. Or, you can move to Russia I suppose. I hear you can see it from Alaska.

First, I have no idea how you surmised that I’d take a pass on fact checking from the media or anywhere else I get my information. I’d call the logic foolish if your statement contained anything resembling logic.
I’m not sure why you felt compelled to tell me that neither girl had sex at the game based on what I said. That was just plain odd.
And yes, I am aware the older daughter got knocked up. It was hard not to learn this fact during the campaign if you didn’t live under a rock. And I don’t even live in the US.

Thanks for pointing out to me what I’d already said. My preschooler enjoys doing that too. It means he’s learning from me.
And sure, he could have just as easily used a made up scenario to crack a joke about Palin. “Sarah Palin and her family went to Russia and Putin tried to get them all liquored up on vodka.” Or “A Priest a Rabbi and Sarah Palin walk into a bar…” But he didn’t. He was addressing a current event in the city where he does his show. She actually went to the game. With her daughter. This was the setup for the jokes.
I simply wondered why he spent 8 minutes addressing this issue, but never acknowledged that it was the 14 year old at the game, which, founded or not, is where most of the complaints stem from.

No one’s attacking letterman’s first amendment rights to say what he did, just his judgment. I don’t see one ounce of difference between this and the don imus situation. I don’t think Imus should have been fired, and I don’t think Letterman should either. Imus at least had the sense to offer an apology to the girl’s black basketball team. As a parent of two teenage girls, a moderate feminist, who knows an ass when she sees one, I will undoubtedly switch to Conan - even though the physical size of his head freaks me out.
The most obvious question is why Democrats seem to think that Dave Letterman picking on the children of public figures in general is OK.
You may disagree with the beliefs of the parent, but is there anyone else but Letterman using the kids of politicians as fair game for mean-spirited jokes?

How amazing that people who consider themselves “progressive” think it’s hysterical when a sour old man like David Letterman refers to a woman — ANY WOMAN — as “slutty” and thinks it’s the height of hilarity to make off color sexual innuendos about a teen-aged girl (whether it’s the 14 year-old or the 18 year-old!)
And why, exactly? Because these oh-so-hip “progressives” don’t like the woman’s politics? So, if we don’t like a woman’s politics, it’s okay to refer to her as “slutty”, and for her children to become fair game? Good to know. Can’t wait to see how these same “progressives” laugh at, praise, and defend the first comic who calls Michelle Obama whorish or suggests that Hugh Grant got confused and asked Sasha or Malia for a blow job.

Got it right HowDroll. Notasmany advances a “schoolkid” argument. It’s okay for Letterman and Progressives to sexually ridicule women because non-Progressives are meanies. The point of contention is Letterman’s actions, not unsupported contentions about “Christen” values. He told loathsome jokes about a politician he has contempt for and her 14-year-old daughter. The sheer, sneering arrogance involved is stunning. Letterman, a man who guards his own private life jealously (a life that has its own quirks) should understand how repulsive the jokes he told were. Unfortunately, his half-apologies suggest he just doesn’t get it. But hey, everyone knows there’s lots of laughs in calling women sluts, suggesting young girls are prostitutes, and smirkily claiming a child got knocked up by a celebrity ballplayer, especially if mom is a conservative. And as for the earlier stumbling, uninformed comments above about rape not being part of Letterman’s schtick, an adult having sex with a 14-year-old is statutory rape. His contention that he didn’t know the daughter at the ball game was 14 strains credulity. He claims he checked that the “knocked up” daughter was 18 before he told the joke, (he thinks that’s old enough to be sexually insulted) so why didn’t he check if he had the right daughter?
