Michael Phelps Named Sportsman Of The Year By Sports Illustrated

Who better to receive Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman Of The Year award than Michael Phelps who won an amazing eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“Michael Phelps as the 2008 Sportsman of the Year was the easiest choice I have made,” Group editor Terry McDonell said. “Look at what he did in Beijing last summer. I was there. I saw him race after race, win again and again - we all saw that. And then to know him now — it is so obvious that he changed not only swimming, but also the entire Olympic landscape.”
Michael Phelps joins Muhammad Ali, Lance Armstrong, Michael Jordan, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, among other athletic greats who have received this award.

Congrats Michael!

Michael Phelps is a great choice because he did something unimaginable. Congrats to him.

But if Phelps weren’t around this year, it should have been Spanish tennis player, Rafael Nadal. He dethroned the great Roger Federer to become number one player in the world, he won a fourth French Open title, and then did something no one’s done since Bjorn Borg, went on to win his first Wimbledon a few weeks later. He did that by again beating Federer in one of the best men’s matches ever.
