Avril Lavigne Earns $1 Million from YouTube

Avril Lavigne’s hit song “Girlfriend” reportedly earned her $1 million in the last year, according to Gigwise.com.

The video has had over 100 million views from around the world since it was posted on YouTube by Avril’s record label and the earnings come from advertisers. However, it’s said that her fans were continually refreshing about every 15 seconds to reach the #1 most viewed.

Netwerk Management CEO, Terry McBride claims that this is a great example of how the music industry should embrace the internet because Avril’s $1 million profit included YouTube’s deduction for their own cut. McBride told MusicTank:

“You’d see a huge shift. We haven’t even given kids the choice to show us this tipping point yet … the profit margin in the digital space is about 300% that inside the physical space.”

What an incredible profit from just one video! I bet the music industry will start paying attention to this example!

Hopefully this is the direction the whole industry will be moving. If it doesn’t the whole industry will go the way of the old fashion record labels and the dinosaurs.
