Paul McCartney Rocked Liverpool

On June 1, 2008, Sir Paul McCartney performed to about 36,000 fans at Anfield Stadium in Liverpool which is being called one of his best, if not the best show ever in celebration of Liverpool being chosen as the Capital of Culture this year. He surprised fans by opening with a fast version of Hippy Hippy Shake which set the tone for the incredible 2 hour show.
His special guest Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters was a special treat for rock fans as well. Dave sang and played guitar to Band on the Run and performed on drums to Back in the USSR. It was cute when Dave banged his head against the mic while singing to Band on the Run. The energy on stage was amazing which made the crowd wild.
Paul acknowledged Linda McCartney earlier by singing My Love which was very touching. However, Macca also did a special tribute to his Beatle lads who are no longer with us with Beatles’ widows Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono in attendance. He performed Something for George Harrison and A Day in the Life as you can watch in the video below for John Lennon. I couldn’t hold back the tears as I imagined John singing with him. It was one of the most special performances I’ve ever witnessed.
Towards the end of the concert, I looked up at the sky and said, “Thank you God.” I felt very grateful to see this rock legend return to his birth town and not only tell the city, but show them he really loves Liverpool.
The support acts were The Zutons and the Kaiser Chiefs. Both bands were f**king incredible. I must go out and buy some of the Zutons music as soon as I have time. I knew the Kaiser Chiefs were going to be good and they certainly lived up, if not, exceeded my expectations.
McCartney usually has quite the presentation with sparks while he performs Live and Let Die, but the fireworks for this show were spectacular. It was a great moment in musical history for me as well as the many others who enjoyed the show as much as I did.
