Clive Davis Slams Kelly Clarkson for Writing Music
photo courtesy of PR Photos/www.prphotos.comClive Davis has reportedly slammed pop singers who demand to write their own music. He believes they should focus on singing instead. He explained:
“The odds are always against you. You have got to go over the best material, and that should win out, not withstanding any track record. I don’t care how many number ones you have written in the past, have you written a new number one?”
Kelly Clarkson was said to be having a public feud with Davis last year when she insisted on co-writing all of songs on her third album. Clive added:
“She was not signed as a singer/songwriter”.
While Davis may have been right in Kelly’s case because her third album “My December” didn’t do as well as her previous album “Breakaway,” I give Kelly credit for attempting to write music. Perhaps it was more important for her to contribute to the music she performs than it was to sell records, but it’s not surprising that the decision didn’t sit well with record executives as they’re more interested in making money.
