Amy Winehouse Traumatized By Father’s Affair?
photo courtesy of PR Photos/www.prphotos.comAmy Winehouse may have stumbled upon her career in music to help her deal with her troubled childhood. Amy’s dad, Mitch Winehouse revealed that he had a longstanding affair soon after Amy was born. Apparently, it was not kept a secret in their house either. Years later, Amy wrote a song called “What It Is About Men” which Amy’s father realized was about him, with a line that says:
“All the sh*t my mother went through.”
Mitch revealed how his children dealt with the other woman:
“The children used to call Jane ‘Daddy’s work wife’. I did not leave home until Amy was ten, so the situation occurred for another eight or nine years before I left home. It was difficult.”
He also thought that by the time he left, Amy had adjusted to her parents splitting up and told a BBC program his regrets:
“I should have left earlier, I should have left sooner. There was not really a negative response from Amy (when I left), but she definitely became a lot more independent. Perhaps deep down she felt her parents were splitting up, she could not rely on them to stay together and that it was about time she learned to look after herself. I thought Amy was over it pretty quickly - in fact it felt at the time Amy felt no effect at all. Maybe she could not articulate it in words, but she certainly did it with music.”
Doctors warned if she continued her drug use, she could die from having further seizures (like the one she had in August). He said:
“She could die horribly. That is not going to happen - that cannot happen. I think she would have found her way here one way or another without any help from me. It is easy for me to say it is my fault, and that had I been a better parent this would not have happened. But who knows whether it would or not?”
Amy probably did suffer from her father’s actions . Having him hang around the house while knowing there was another woman he’d rather spend his time with must have been very confusing and hurtful. She might have blamed herself a little bit and felt tremendous pity for her mother. It’s a good thing that he’s trying to make amends and do the right thing for her by supporting her to get clean. Let’s just hope she finds a way to do it.
