American Idol 7 Top 12 Butchered the Beatles Tonight

The first few minutes of Idol tonight were fantastic when they showed the Beatles clips. However, the rest of the next hour and fifty-five minutes seemed like the longest in my life. Here’s a review of American Idol’s Top 12, but it’s not going to be pretty…

  1. Syesha Mercado - did the Earth Wind & Fire version of “Got to Get You Into My Life” and it wasn’t half bad, but I wouldn’t say it was that great either.
  2. Chikezie Ezie - sang “She’s A Woman” and as soon as the song started, I was thinking, “WTF?” He turned the beginning into a square dance song and then a cheesy rock version of it. Yuck! His vocals weren’t too bad, but I thought the version was awful. The judges loved it. The only comment I agreed with was when Simon said he looked like he was running around drunk on stage but I disagreed with everything else.
  3. Ramiele Malubay - performed the most boring version of “In My Life” that I’ve ever heard. Not only did it sound boring, but it felt very insincere, lacking any real emotion to a song that is very emotional for anyone who hears it.
  4. Jason Castro - his version of “If I Fell” wasn’t bad. I actually enjoyed it because he made it sound different and a little up-tempo, but I wasn’t jumping out of my chair over it. I agreed with Paula when she said it was special and that he connected emotionally with the song and the audience.
  5. Carly Smithson - wrong voice for the song “Come Together” but she was rather entertaining. The judges loved it.
  6. David Cook - good rock version to “Eleanor Rigby” - although he missed a few notes, it was overall a decent performance.
  7. Brooke White - horrible performance of “Let it Be” - she just doesn’t have the right voice for this song even though she was emotionally connected with the lyrics. I was thinking that if I were Paul McCartney watching, I would’ve thrown up a little. Prior to this, the last couple of weeks, she was growing on me as a performer, but this one stunk. Of course the judges loved her. Simon thought it was one of the best. Ew.
  8. David Hernandez - cheesy, corny awful, horrendous performance of “I Saw Her Standing There” - I can’t believe I agreed with all of the judges on this one as they didn’t like it either.
  9. Amanda Overmyer - awful performance of “You Can’t Do That” - I couldn’t understand one word she attempted to sing. Randy loved it but I hated it. The only thing I agreed with his feedback was when he said her performance was like something at a southern bar.
  10. Michael Johns - had the best intro of the night as he said something like “I feel like you can’t be a true musician if you weren’t touched by the Beatles music.” He sang “Across the Universe” beautifully. I was happy he didn’t change it up and seemed to have an intense connection with the song. I also think he was the best tonight too.
  11. Kristy Lee Cook - absolutely sucked tonight while murdering “Eight Days a Week” by doing a country version. Luckily I didn’t have a knife close by because I might’ve killed myself watching her and listening to her awful rendition. Even Paula didn’t like it and she usually tries to be nice to everyone and she didn’t even compliment her on her looks tonight. Simon made me laugh when he said she was like “Dolly Parton on helium” - it was the WORST performance imaginable. I so disliked her last week after butchering a great Journey song, but now I hate her.
  12. David Archuleta - was like a lost puppy singing “We Can Work it Out” and unfortunately, he really did not work it out. It was disappointing that he forgot the words, but he also didn’t sound great. He looked nervous and a little preoccupied for some reason. I felt slightly sorry for him, but at the same time, wanted him to hurry and get off the stage.

Fave tonight: Michael Johns
Top 3 Worst in order: 1) Kristy Lee Cook, 2) David Hernandez, 3) Amanda Overmyer
Prediction of Who’ll Get the Boot: Kristy Lee Cook has got to go!

I absolutely LOVE the Beatles, and I actually liked AI last night. Yes, some of my favorite songs were butchered (particularly that horrendous hoe-down version of Eight Days A Week)… but I loved the performances by David Cook, Jason Castro, Chikezie, Carly and Brooke. No one will ever perform these songs as well as the Beatles did, but I have to admit that I was impressed with a few of these kids.

Biggest surprise of the night for me? How one of the Beatles’ most beautiful songs, “In My Life”, can be made to be so tremendously boring.

Whoops! I need to add that I agree with you about Michael Johns’ performance of Across the Universe - well done.
