American Idol 7 Top 11 Murdered the Beatles Again!

Like last week, American Idol Season 7 contestants did a horrible job performing the Beatles. The most enjoyable part was the two minutes in the beginning of the show where they showed clips of the Fab Four. I wonder if Sir Paul McCartney or Ringo Starr tuned in to see them butcher the songs again. I hope for their sakes, they didn’t bother.

Here’s a review of the 11 performances, but again, be ready for the unpleasantness:

  1. Amanda Overmyer - performed a horrendous version of “Back in the USSR.” It was shaky in the beginning as if she couldn’t reach some notes, but it didn’t get any better unfortunately. It was like listening to a nightmare that one just wants to wake up from and shake off. I wonder if she has laryngitis because her speaking voice even sounded really hoarse. Amanda insisted that she doesn’t do like to do ballads because she likes to show people what they would get at one of her shows. Well my response to her is: “No thank you - I’ve seen plenty now.”
  2. Kristy Lee Cook - Last week, I actually felt traumatized by her performance and wasn’t really sure whether or not I could take watching another, but I took some deep breaths (as was suggested) and bravely prepared for the worst. She sang “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” which is such a great song. Unfortunately, she sang it without any emotion and moved like a robot on stage. On the good side, it wasn’t as bad as last week, but it wasn’t anywhere near good. Paula Abdul did her usual in complimenting her looks to soften the blow, but she should’ve just came out and said, “You suck! Get off the stage already!”
  3. David Archuleta - did a pretty decent job of “The Long and Winding Road” and believe me, I was prepared for him to disappoint again, but he didn’t. He was actually the best tonight. Perhaps his nutty dad won’t have to scold him after this performance since he received good reviews from the judges as well.
  4. Michael Johns - wasn’t as bad as what the judges were saying. Simon Cowell told him that he was “all over the place.” Michael sang “A Day in the Life” and although he seemed to struggle with the high notes and moved around the stage a little strange, he looked like he connected with the meaning of the song. He probably gets the Beatles more than the other contestants as he he pointed out in his intro calling the Beatles “the best band that will ever be.” So true!
  5. Brooke White - hideous version of “Here Comes the Sun” - OMG, first of all, she doesn’t have the right voice for such a sweet and deep song, but she really didn’t get it at all. She moved around awkwardly on stage and did a “Whoo” at the end. It was so bizarre watching her move around the stage in her yellow dress like she didn’t know what to do with herself - YUCK!
  6. David Cook - did a decent version of “Day Tripper” as he showed off some great vocals. The thing with him is that he still gives off this arrogant vibe when he’s on stage and I find it pretty annoying. He also attempted to use this voice thingy which didn’t really work for the song, but overall, he wasn’t bad.
  7. Carly Smithson - performed “Blackbird” and again chose the wrong song for her voice. That song is so sweet and vulnerable that doesn’t have to be belt out to make an impact. She also did weird things to it too. I didn’t enjoy it at all.
  8. Jason Castro - horrible performance of “Michelle” - Paula summed it up perfectly when she said it was like a polka song and awkward. I thought he sang the song weak and it felt kinda like a joke. He also proved he’s not very smart when he admitted that he wasn’t aware that “ma belle” is French. Duh! Okay, maybe he doesn’t get out much and perhaps he’s never heard the French language. If I didn’t like him before, I’d just call him a dumbass, but I won’t.
  9. Syesha Mercado - did a heartfelt performance of “Yesterday” - it didn’t blow me away, but it wasn’t bad.
  10. Chikezie Ezie - suprisingly, I actually enjoyed his performance of “I’ve Just Seen a Face” which was kind of goofy, but I smiled and kinda laughed through it because he seemed to enjoy himself. If it were on the radio, I would’ve probably switched the station right away, but it didn’t gross me out like last week. I’m sure others will disagree with me and preferred his other performance though.
  11. Ramiele Malubay - I’m at the point where I don’t expect much from her anymore. She sang “I Should’ve Known Better” in an awful karaoke way on top of that. Her dancing was icky to watch and while she doesn’t have the worst vocals, she never seems to show them off. It was terrible. Maybe her high heels were preventing her from moving in a good way - I would suggest trying something different next time (if there is a next time).

Faves tonight: David Archuleta and Syesha Mercado
Worst in order: 1) Amanda Overmyer, 2) Brooke White 3) Kristy Lee Cook (surprisingly didn’t suck the most this week, but she still sucks…at least I gave her another chance, right?)
Prediction of who’ll get the boot: Kristy Lee Cook (It’s her turn to go already!)

A agree that Castro did a terrible job and it was a bit like a polka. However, I thought Brookes was decent, not terrible.
