Katharine McPhee Was Dumped?

Katharine McPhee was reportedly dropped by her label which was confirmed by a rep from RCA. I guess debuting at No. 2 was not good enough as her album hasn’t even gone gold yet even though it was released almost a year ago. However, McPhee isn’t alone though as Taylor Hicks was also dropped by J Records just two days before. Ruben Studdard had been dumped late last year by J. Records as well. Caryn Ganz from Rollingstone.com revealed thoughts to Usmagazine.com on the reason:

“I think the industry has seen that unless these artists can churn out strong enough original material, they don’t really have that much traction once we don’t see them on television week after week singing songs we already know and love. The majority of major-label artists fail to make a splash — the Idols may have gotten these record deals through less conventional means, but they’re falling victim to the same woes now that they’re playing the same game as everyone else.”

Are you planning to watch the 7th season of American Idol which premieres on Tuesday? It’s not surprising Taylor Hicks was dumped, but I’m a little more surprised about McPhee because I thought her looks would take her a little further. I wouldn’t have bothered buying any of their music anyway though.

BMG is getting very defensive about this one—–people realize that she’s been mishandled from the get-go, and are blogging about it and giving them grief. Releasing her album during the slowest sales period of the year when it was ready to go two months before, insisting on the terrible “Over it” as a first single when there were a half dozen much better choices on her album, then failing to promote her second single at all. Katharine’s in talks with another major label now, and I imagine she’s as happy to be away from RCA as her fans are happy that she’s going elsewhere.
