Desperate Housewives is a Racist Show!

How desperate is the TV show “Desperate Housewives” and the ABC network to get more publicity? Did they purposely put a foot in Susan’s mouth, played by Teri Hatcher, when they insulted Filipinos everywhere? In a scene in which Susan was told by her gynecologist that she might be hitting menopause, she replied:

“Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines.”

How stupid and irresponsible of the show’s creators and the ABC network to air something so degrading like that! ABC reportedly apologized after fielding thousands of angry calls over a punchline in Sunday night’s season premiere of the show.

You can read and sign the petition just as I did that demanded an apology from ABC and “Desperate Housewiveshere. However, the apology may not be enough for the Filipino community and activists who are deeply offended by such an asinine message attacking the validity of Filipinos in the medical profession, because it was not the first time Filipinos have been ridiculed for the sake of comedy in the U.S.

Anon: I don’t think that it’s people are offended by everything today. I think cultures are smarter and more empowered to speak out nowadays. The problem is that people stereotype other cultures by what’s not just said in the news, but in pop culture.

Better writing would have written the part as, “I hope that blah-blah wasn’t educated in some Third World country where medical standards suck.”

By the way, I’m not Filipino. I even work for an ABC affiliate…

What people have to realize is that this is a FICTIONAL COMEDY. Granted, I believe that it would be very wrong of ABC to air an editorial that insults the Phillipine medical educational system. But remember, a good writer writes dialog that is in character for the character… and it would be completely in character for Susan to put her foot in her mouth and say something utterly ridiculous, even insulting, without realizing that she’s doing so. Nobody in their right mind would listen to Susan and form an opinion based on her lines. To think so is insulting not to Filipinos, but to the viewing public.

“I think cultures are smarter and more empowered to speak out nowadays”… So before “cultures” were dumb?? “cultures” being non-white people??? Whatever…

I noticed that thing ‘Susan’ said and thought it was weird. But why didn’t she say “and make sure they aren’t from some medical school in Italy” where you can actually become a licensed and practicing brain (or heart or any specialty) surgeon without EVER HAVING STEPPED FOOT IN AN OPERATING ROOM…

The irony is the US healthcare industry is saturated with competent Filipino nurses.

You have to turn your brain off to make 99.99% of television plausible. The people who take television seriously enough to bitch about it are stupider than the people who write the shit.
