I never thought that there could be anyone in the Republican Party dumber than our current President, but here’s the guy who wins the prize…he’s even a Presidential hopeful for 2008 - Mitt Romney.

Romney reportedly placed his family dog, an Irish setter named Seamus, into a dog carrier on top of his car for a 12-hour family trip from Boston to Ontario in 1983. Because he wasn’t protected by a wind screen, Seamus showed his discomfort by having a diarrhea attack. When Romney’s eldest son noticed the brown liquid running down the back windshield, Romney pulled the car over at a gas station, hosed and sprayed down the dog and the carrier and returned on the road.

Steven Benen posted on the blog, “Crooks and Liars”:

“Massachusetts animal cruelty laws specifically prohibit anyone from carrying an animal `in or upon a vehicle, or otherwise, in an unnecessarily cruel or inhuman manner or in a way and manner which might endanger the animal carried thereon.’”

Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, told Time magazine’s “Swampland” blog:

“If you wouldn’t strap your child to the roof of your car, you have no business doing that to the family dog!”

Romney dismissed any complaints about the incident insisting that his dog enjoyed being on the top of the car:

“He scrambled up there every time we went on trips. He got it all by himself and enjoyed it.”

What a jerk! His poor dog was suffering and he fails to acknowledge that he contributed to that. Someone should strap him to the top of a car for 12 hours and see how much he enjoys it. And to think this guy who can’t take proper care of a dog wants to take care of a nation?
